East Africa Union Pathfinder Camporee

On December 8-18, 2011, the quinquennial East Africa Union Pathfinder Camporee was held at Mamboleo Showground, Kisumu County, Kenya. Kisumu County is located on the shores of the Lake Victoria, the second largest fresh water lake in the world after Lake Superior in North America. The camporee was attended by 15,500 official delegates and 4,500 non-official delegates who represented Central Kenya Conference, Central Nyanza Field, Kenya Coast Field, Kenya Lake Field, Nyamira Conference, Ranen Field, South Kenya Conference, Western Kenya Field, and South Sudan.

The event was organized by Pastor Alex Malayi, EAU Youth Director, who passed his baton of leadership to Samson Onyango as he will now be serving as a professor of psychology at Baraton University.
Typically camporees last about five days, however, the East Africa Union camporee lasted for ten, and yet the campers did not lose their enthusiasm or energy. A soccer field served as the assembly place for morning and evening worship, Sabbath worship, marching, and parade. There were also 55 honor classes and physical activities were offered.
The theme of the camporee was: “Destined to Fly.” A lively and dynamic theme song was composed with the title: “Revival for Mission, Destined to Fly.” The mascot chosen for this camporee was the eagle, an appropriate symbol for the campers as “the high-flying king of the birds.”
The Kenyan Prime Minister had planned to attend, but unfortunately he was not able; however, he sent Bob Patrick Madanji (HSC), Chairman of the Agricultural Society of Kenya, and Samuel O. Okello, Kisumu, City Mayor, as representatives.
On the last Sabbath, 30,000 people flooded the soccer field to worship the Lord. At the end of the sermon, the speaker made an altar call for baptism, and on that beautiful Sabbath 514 young people, 32 adults, and 482 Pathfinders gave their lives to Christ. It was a beautiful display of victories of faith.

On December 7, 2011, an accident occurred to a chartered bus used by delegates going to the EAU Pathfinder Camporee.  The bus overturned on its way due to the flat tire, killing three passengers, a church elder, a mother and a Pathfinder, and injuring 16 other Pathfinders, three of them had their arms amputated.
Please remember the bereaved families in your prayers.
