Re-Visioning Youth Ministries

During the week of March 27-April 2, 2011, the General Conference youth directors met with their division counterparts from around the world at the Doubletree Hotel in Columbia, Maryland, U.S.A. in order to plan and discuss the objectives and mission of this quinquennium.

The field was represented by the youth directors of the thirteen divisions.

Up first on the agenda was to modify the mission statement of the youth department, which now reads: “Our mission is to lead young people into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ and help them embrace His call to discipleship.”

It was also voted to accept the newly-created Adventist Youth Model, which had been formed as a result of the joint effort of the division and General Conference youth directors in previous months  as a guideline for youth ministry in years to come. (See model above.)

The five yearly themes were also discussed, and an action was taken to accept the following:

  • 2011: Identity
  • 2012: Discipleship/Small Groups
  • 2013: Mission/Social Action
  • 2014: Mentoring
  • 2015: Reclamation

In addition to planning for the quinquennium, the youth directors also spent time opening the Word every morning. Several speakers were invited to share messages of hope, including Elder Ted N.C. Wilson, President of the Seventh-day Adventist church.

Our hope is that the prayerful decisions made at the 2011 World Youth Advisory will contribute to the empowering of youth around the world to emulate Christ’s principles and help to prepare the world for His soon coming.
